The mathematics department, in the College of Arts and Sciences, offers a PhD in a variety of areas of mathematics. The American Mathematical Society has ranked the program in the top group of U.S. research departments.
The department has distinguished research groups in:

- Mathematical biology
- Number theory
- Probability
- Topology
The department is large enough to provide the quality and breadth required for a major research department, yet small enough that graduate students have close interactions with the faculty.
There are over 30 faculty members and approximately 65-70 graduate students each year.
