Mathematics: PhD

The mathematics department, in the College of Arts and Sciences, offers a PhD in a variety of areas of mathematics. The American Mathematical Society has ranked the program in the top group of U.S. research departments.

The department has distinguished research groups in:

  • Algebra
  • Analysis
  • Geometry
  • Mathematical biology
  • Number theory
  • Probability
  • Topology

The department is large enough to provide the quality and breadth required for a major research department, yet small enough that graduate students have close interactions with the faculty.

There are over 30 faculty members and approximately 65-70 graduate students each year.
