Graduate Employment Funding Extension Petition

The GE Funding Extension is an award of up to one year of additional GE funding for graduate students who were told by a UO employee that a GE appointment outside of their home/hiring unit would not count against their funding offer provided at the time of admission. A graduate student may petition for additional GE funding during academic year 2023-24 or 2024-25. The additional GE funding will be provided during the academic year immediately following petition.

Eligibility

Graduate students using the petition process must satisfy all of the following eligibility requirements:

  • Matriculated into a doctoral program prior to Fall 2022 and was provided a multi-year GE funding offer at the time of admission.
  • Depleted their guaranteed years of GE funding offered at the time of admission (per official admissions offer letter) prior to the year this extension would be awarded.
  • Employed for at least one academic year outside of the home/hiring unit that made the original funding offer at the time of admission. 
  • Received no more than 5 years of funding from the University at the time of petition. 
  • In good academic standing, has advanced to candidacy, and has an approved dissertation proposal.
  • Current academic advisor or Dept Head can verify that student is on track to complete their doctoral degree within the period of the extension. 
  • Current academic advisor or Dept Head can verify that the student's total time to degree will not be more than 7 years.

Ineligibility

The petition process is not allowed for graduate students who do not satisfy the eligibility requirements in the Eligibility section or for:

  • GEs in units where there is documentation that a student was advised that obtaining a GE outside of the home/hiring unit may count against their original funding offer provided at admission. 
  • GEs who have already received a funding extension related to the situation covered by this petition process.

GEs petitioning for an additional year of funding for academic year 2024-25 must submit a petition to the Division of Graduate Studies by March 15, 2024

GEs petitioning for an additional year of funding for academic year 2025-26 must submit a petition to the Division of Graduate Studies by October 1, 2024.
