Duties:
The New Media and Culture graduate certificate seeks a motivated, research-oriented graduate student for a position focused on:
1) assistance with program administration, and 2) research assistance in the context of the program’s web-based digital humanities initiatives.
The expected FTE for this appointment is .49 FTE for the Fall, Winter, and Spring terms of the 2026-27 academic term. The appointment will be made on a term-to-term basis with expectation of renewal for each term based on successful performance. The New Media and Culture Graduate Certificate Program (NMCC) is a growing interdisciplinary certificate available to all graduate students on campus through which they can formalize their study of new media. The successful applicant will work on projects such as:
• Curating a regular stream of content for the Certificate’s cross-platform web presence using Drupal, Mailchimp, and possibly also social media; exploring ways of streamlining and automating this web presence in future years, as well as identifying new and emerging ways of connecting with NMCC affiliates through social media.
• Researching UO course offerings focused on new media and culture, communication with faculty offering these courses, and maintaining data on these courses.
• Conducting outreach to UO students and faculty, including making visits to graduate seminars in areas of growth for NMCC.
• Helping coordinate, publicize, and host the Certificate’s annual Data|Media|Digital symposium, to be held at the Knight Library DREAM Lab in Winter or Spring term.
• Helping coordinate, publicize, and host the Annual Lecture NMCC lecture, which will take place in Winter or Spring term. This will involve helping to coordinate related events, including a workshop for NMCC grads and possibly other campus events.
• Developing Digital Humanities research project in an assistive capacity to current NMCC graduates.
• Assisting the Director in managing graduate student applications to the program, meeting with prospective applicants, and helping to maintain non-sensitive student records
• Assisting the Director in preparation of annual program reports In order to successfully execute these projects, the GE will meet weekly with the Director.
The GE will receive training and supervision in their assigned duties and will also have the opportunity to design, propose, and execute projects on their own initiative to advance NMCC’s programmatic goals.
Preferred Qualifications:
Required Qualifications:
• Excellent writing, editing, and communication skills;
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel, OneDrive, SharePoint, Outlook, Calendar, Teams, etc.), Google productivity suite (Gmail, Docs, Drive, Sheets), Adobe Acrobat, and Trello project management software (free version);
• Exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail;
• Self-motivation and ability to work independently;
• Availability by email during regular business hours in the business week;
• Availability for in-person, on-campus meetings and events weekly during the academic term (with exceptions allowed for conference/research travel if planned in advance with the Director).
Preferred Qualifications:
• Administrative experience in a related academic program or project;
• Experience with event coordination and hosting;
• Interdisciplinary research interests and experience;
• Basic web design/development skills (e.g. Drupal, WordPress, HTML, CSS);
• Understanding of (or willingness to be trained in) web accessibility requirements;
• Basic graphic design/development skills (e.g. Photoshop, Canva);
• Social media and email campaign management skills (e.g. Instagram, Twitter/X, Facebook, MailChimp);
• Academic and curricular experience with NMCC (however, this is not a requirement and all interested UO graduate students may apply);
• Preference is for PhD Students (however, this is not a requirement and all interested UO graduate students may apply).
