Overview
This page outlines the steps and requirements to apply as an international graduate student at the University of Oregon.
You are considered an international student if you:
- Are a citizen or permanent resident of a country other than the United States and you intend to return
- Are in the United States on an educational, worker, or visitor visa, or are residing in your home country
- Have filed an application for United States citizenship or permanent residency, but have not yet been granted approval
If you are a US citizen or permanent resident, refer to the domestic application procedures.
Step 1: Review Program Requirements
Each graduate program sets its own application deadlines and required materials. Before applying, check your intended program's requirements:

Step 2: Complete the Online Application
Start your application using our Slate system:
Individual program requirements will vary, but most programs will require that you:
- Enter your academic history
- Upload unofficial transcripts* from all post-secondary institutions attended
- Indicate how you will meet the English language proficiency requirement**
- Upload your resume or CV
- Upload a statement of purpose
- Submit GMAT/GRE scores (varies by program)
- Provide names and contact information for references
You may apply to more than one graduate program per term. To apply to multiple programs you will create a new application for each program through your application portal.
*Unofficial transcripts are required for your application. If offered admission, you will then be required to provide official transcripts from all institutions where you have earned a Bachelor's degree or higher. Additional requirements for international transcripts may apply. Review the full policy below:

**Self-reported or unofficial English proficiency test scores are acceptable for your initial application review. Official test scores must be submitted before a final admission offer can be made. Additional details are available on the English proficiency policy page
Step 3: Pay the Application Fee
International Applicant Fee: $90
- Payment is required in order for your application to be reviewed
- Application fee is non-refundable
- Pay by debit/credit card within Slate
- If you are unable to pay via one of these methods, contact the Division of Graduate Studies for assistance
Waivers: The Division of Graduate Studies offers a limited number of fee waivers for international applicants with significant financial need. Applicants must be nominated by their prospective program for a fee waiver. For more information visit:
Step 4: Complete Additional Program Requirements (if applicable)
After you submit your application you may be requested to provide additional documents or complete additional steps, such as:
- Submitting official test scores

Step 5: Track Your Status
After submitting your application:
- Log in to Slate at any time to check the status of your materials
- Monitor your email for updates from the Division of Graduate Studies and your academic department
Step 6: After Admission - Submit Financial Documents
If you are admitted and plan to study at UO on an F-1 or J-1 visa, you must submit the following before your Form I-20 or DS-2019 can be issued:
- Proof of financial support showing you can cover at least one year of tuition, fees, and living expenses
- A copy of your passport photo page
If you already hold an active F-1 or J-1 SEVIS record, financial documents are still required before your SEVIS transfer can be processed.
