Made possible by a generous donation of Mr. Lorry I. Lokey, the Lokey Graduate Science Awards aim to help doctoral programs compete with AAU benchmark institutions in the recruitment of the top students into their programs.

Award Details

  • $6,000 per award

  • Programs may request to divide the $6,000 among multiple students

  • Programs are eligible to receive multiple awards

Eligibility and Criteria

  • Doctoral programs that fall into one of the following NSF research areas:

    • Biological Sciences
    • Computer and Information Science and Engineering
    • Education and Human Resources
    • Engineering
    • Environmental Research and Education
    • Geosciences
    • Mathematical and Physical Sciences
    • Social, Behavioral and Economic Sciences
  • Funds must be used to increase the quality and/or quantity of incoming doctoral students


  • Department head or director of graduate studies submits application via Qualtrics by December 10, 2021

  • The Division of Graduate Studies notifies programs of allocation decisions

  • Programs offer awards to incoming students as per their proposed plan

  • Programs notify Division of awardees

  • Funds are disbursed directly to students during their first term
