Graduate study is not limited to one type of student. Some applicants continue directly from undergrad, while others return after years in the workforce. Whether your goal is to deepen your expertise, advance your career, develop new skills, or explore a new field, graduate education can support your goals.
If you have earned - or will earn before classes begin - a bachelor's degree (or its international equivalent), you meet the basic requirement to apply for graduate study at the University of Oregon.
Individual graduate programs establish their own admissions requirements and selection criteria. These may include minimum GPA expectations, prerequisite coursework, portfolios, professional experience, or other program-specific requirements.
Basic Graduate School Requirements
To apply at the UO, you must:
- Hold a bachelor's degree or higher from:
- A regionally accredited four-year U.S. college or university
- An equivalent credential from a recognized international institution
- Complete your undergraduate degree before your first day of classes at the UO
Depending on your background, you may also need to:
- Meet the English Language Proficiency Requirement
- Demonstrate sufficient financial support (required by U.S. Government regulations for international applicants).
These requirements are part of the application process and are explained in more detail in the application steps.
If you already hold a graduate degree at the same level and in the same discipline as your prospective program:
- The content of your new program must be fundamentally different from your previous degree
- Admission requires your prospective program to petition the Division of Graduate Studies on your behalf
