How do I find the right graduate program for me?

Graduate school is an opportunity to build on your existing background or explore a new area of interest. Choosing the right graduate program starts with understanding your academic interests and career goals. Consider what skills you want to develop and how a graduate degree will support your long-term plans, as well as what you would like to study.

In many cases, your graduate field study does not need to match your undergraduate degree. However, some programs may have specific prerequisite requirements.

Many graduate programs are built around mentorship and research alignment. Look for faculty expertise and research opportunities that match your interests and goals.

Another consideration is the structure and format of a program, including whether it is full-time or part-time.

Our program directory can help you learn more about your options, review requirements, and find the program that best fits your goals.

What are the admission requirements for grad school at the UO?

All graduate programs at the University of Oregon require a bachelor's degree or U.S. equivalent from an accredited institution. The bachelor's degree must be conferred before the start date of your first term as a graduate student.

Additional requirements vary by program. Program requirements may include materials such as a statement of purpose, résumé or CV, letters of recommendation, writing samples, or test scores. Be sure to review your program's website for specific requirements and waiver ability.

Many programs welcome applicants from a range of academic backgrounds, and it's not always necessary for your undergraduate degree to be in the same field. However, some programs may have prerequisite coursework or experience.

I am an international applicant - what are my requirements?

We welcome applications from students around the world! Nearly 1 in 5 graduate students at the UO are international, and we're here to support you throughout the application and enrollment process.

In addition to the basic application materials, as an international applicant you may need to provide English language proficiency documentation and translated academic records from your previous institution(s). Additional requirements can vary by program and academic background, so we encourage you to review both university and program-specific guidelines.

Our International Applicants page provides additional details on English proficiency and other international admissions requirements.

How much does grad school cost, and what funding is available?

The cost of graduate school varies by program and may differ based on your residency status (in-state or out-of-state) or program-specific tuition models. We recommend using the UO's Cost of Attendance tools to estimate tuition and fees for your program of interest.

Many graduate students receive financial support to help offset the cost of their education. Funding opportunities at the UO may include graduate employee (GE) positions, which provide a monthly stipend as well as tuition support while offering résumé-building experience in teaching, research, or administration. Academic programs, the Division of Graduate Studies, the university, and campus units also offer a variety of scholarships and fellowships.

Because funding and costs vary by program, we encourage you to review your program's website for detailed information and available opportunities.

What happens after I apply, and when will I receive my decision?

After you submit your application and pay your application fee, your materials will be reviewed by the academic program you applied to. Admissions timelines vary by program, which means review periods and decision dates may differ.

If needed, you may be contacted to provide additional information or clarifications that support your application.

Once a decision is made, you will be notified via email and within the application portal. Some programs release decisions after specific review periods, whiles others have rolling decisions.
