FTE: 0.49
Terms: Spring
Academic Year: 2024-25
Duties:
ELP is an innovative, team- and community-based learning program that provides an opportunity for undergraduates to apply their classroom learning to environmental issues in our community. As a GE, you will be responsible for mentoring a team of 11 undergraduate students as they complete field projects, in coordination with Peg Boulay (Co-Director Environmental Leadership Program) and one or more community partner organizations. The ELP Project Manager GE position provides graduate students with project management, supervision and mentoring experience, as well as a deep understanding of experiential pedagogies. You do not need previous project management experience, but you do need enthusiasm, a commitment to excellence, a solid work ethic, good communication and organization skills, and an ability to be flexible and adaptable.
Preferred Qualifications:
ENVS 429 ELP: Oregon Ash – 1 GE position
The Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) is a destructive invasive beetle accidentally introduced to North America. It has resulted in the death of tens of millions of ash trees in the eastern United States, dramatically changing ecosystems. Because EAB was discovered in the Portland area during 2022, the City of Eugene’s natural area personnel have started monitoring to characterize existing Oregon Ash forests and to survey for EAB presence in Eugene’s parks and natural areas. This team will work with city staff to implement a comprehensive protocol to measure plant community composition.
Minimum qualifications:
• Available during class times: 4-5:50 pm Mondays, 9am – 4:50 pm Fridays
• Enthusiasm for providing supervision, guidance, mentoring, constructive feedback, and professional development for a small team of undergraduates
• Experience collecting vegetation data following standardized protocols
Preferred skills and experience:
• Knowledge of plant identification, forestry methods, and/or insect biology
• Experience in project management
ENVS 429 ELP: Restoration & Research 2025 – 1 GE position
With the overall goals of providing shade for Goose Creek and habitat for pollinators, ELP teams have been planning, implementing and maintaining a riparian restoration project at an organic farm, Whitewater Ranch, since 2014. The plantings are thriving, so this team begin transitioning the project to “free to grow” status by interplanting, removing weed mats, controlling non-native blackberry, and continuing our long-term monitoring of vegetation, pollinators and water temperature. In addition, in partnership with the UO Ponisio Lab, this team will also collect data in research plots that are examining ways to enhance pollinator populations after major disturbances such the September 2020 Holiday Farm Fire and timber harvest. This project will build upon the 2014-2024 Sustainable Farms, Riparian Restoration, Promoting Pollinators and Restoration & Research teams’ work.
