Overview

By submitting a Dissertation Fellowship application, candidates are first considered for a UO Doctoral Research Fellowship.

Those not selected for a UO Doctoral Research Fellowship will be considered for the Lokey Graduate Science Fellowships. Students cannot be selected for more than one fellowship.

The same nomination/application makes nominees eligible for each of the two fellowship categories:

UO Doctoral Research Fellowships

For students in any UO PhD program, these fellowships are awarded to the two most outstanding doctoral students as determined by a faculty selection committee.

Dissertations to be considered can be on any topic and are judged on the quality of the written proposal and the potential impact of the research both within and beyond the student’s field.

These awards include the following components.

  • Fall, Winter, and Spring Research GE position, including GE salary at home department’s graduate employee rate, paid on the same monthly schedule as a regular GE appointment
  • Graduate employee remission (tuition, fee subsidy, insurance)
  • $6,000 supplemental award

Lokey Doctoral Science Fellowships

Made possible by a generous donation of Mr. Lorry I. Lokey, the Lokey Doctoral Science Fellowships support students during their final year of doctoral study to allow them to focus on their research endeavors and to prepare for the next steps in their academic career. We anticipate awarding as many as 3 Lokey Fellowships this year. Students in programs that fall into one of the following NSF research areas are eligible for consideration:

  • Biological Sciences
  • Computer and Information Science and Engineering
  • Education and Human Resources
  • Engineering
  • Environmental Research and Education
  • Geosciences
  • Mathematical and Physical Sciences
  • Social, Behavioral and Economic Sciences

These awards include the following components.

  • Fall, Winter, and Spring Research GE position, including GE salary at home department’s graduate employee rate, paid on the same monthly schedule as a regular GE appointment
  • Graduate employee remission (tuition, fee subsidy, insurance)
  • $6,000 supplemental award

School/College-Specific Dissertation Research Fellowships

No fellowships in this category will be offered for 2022-23.

Eligibility and Criteria

To be eligible, doctoral students must be advanced to candidacy and have their dissertation committee on file with the Division of Graduate Studies by the end of the spring 2022 term and will be expected to complete their doctoral degree in winter, spring, or summer 2023.

In the case that a student who has not advanced to candidacy is selected to receive the award, they will officially receive the award only if they advance to candidacy by the end of spring 2022.

Recipients must register for at least 9 dissertation credits during each term of the fellowship.

Nomination and Application Process

Step 1: Department/School/College Nominations

Internal Pre-Application Process and Deadline

Each department should establish an internal pre-application process and deadline for students to be considered for nomination. The internal deadline should be early enough so that students who are selected for nomination can submit the Division of Graduate Studies application by March 1st. The Division of Graduate Studies has disseminated information by email to departments, schools, and colleges with suggestions on how to handle the internal pre-application.

Number of Nominations

  • Each PhD program may nominate 1 student.

Step 2: Student Application and Letters of Recommendation

PRIOR to submitting a Dissertation Fellowship application, all applicants MUST first be selected for nomination by their department or program. If you are selected for nomination by your program, you must submit the following materials via the online application no later than Tuesday, March 1st:

  1. A research prospectus of the dissertation
    • Up to 1,500 words
    • No more than 5 pages, excluding works cited pages
    • Works cited may not exceed three pages
    • Should be written in language accessible to faculty who are not necessarily specialists in the subject area
  2. A CV or résumé identifying academic awards, honors, and scholarly activity
  3. Contact information for two faculty recommenders who will be asked to write a letter outlining the candidate’s research, academic background, and potential as a developing scholar. These letters should not exceed two pages. Once the student enters the recommenders’ information in the online award application, the recommenders will receive an email with instructions for submitting their letters. The deadline for submission of letters of recommendation is Tuesday, March 8th.

Step 3: Nomination Confirmation

Once students have submitted their application materials in the online application system, the Division of Graduate Studies will contact the Directors of Graduate Study in each unit to confirm that the student who applied is the student that was selected for nomination by that program.

Selection Process and Timeline

  • Applications will be evaluated by a subcommittee of the Graduate Council.
  • Fellowship decisions will be made by early May.
  • The stipend, tuition remission, fee subsidies, and health insurance will commence in Fall 2022.
