Dissertation & Thesis Award

Your two recommendation letters must also be submitted no later than March 7, 2025, 11:59 PM. Only complete applications submitted by the deadline will be accepted. 

Overview

This award is designed to provide support to (a) advance the students’ completion of their thesis or dissertation research or (b) assist students with traveling to present their thesis or dissertation research to a professional audience beyond the UO. Students’ thesis or dissertation research must have already been approved by their academic program or dissertation committee. 

Examples of research activities and expenses include, but are not limited to:

  • Registration for and travel to a specialized conference for the purposes of presenting the research
  • Purchase of unique and specialized equipment, services, consultations or materials needed to advance research
  • Field or discipline-specific instructor/facilitator training needed to advance research 

Award Details

  • Up to $2,000 will be awarded to each student. 

Eligibility and Criteria

  • Must be currently enrolled Master's, Doctoral, or Law student
  • Must be enrolled full time at the time of award distribution.
  • Must be making satisfactory academic progress toward completion of degree requirements. Review the Division of Graduate Studies' satisfactory progress requirement.
  • Must have received committee approval to conduct thesis or dissertation research. 

Application

Applicants must apply online. The online application includes:

  • A statement (no more than 600 words) directed to an audience of non-specialists summarizing the research activities for which the funding is requested. The statement should state why this is a unique opportunity and a) how it will advance your dissertation or thesis research; or b) what are your plans for presenting your research to a professional audience outside of the UO.  
  • A budget for the proposed activity, no more than 300 words.
  • Recommendations from 2 faculty members:
    • One letter from your primary faculty advisor
    • One letter from another UO faculty member​

You may apply for this award regardless of immigration status or work eligibility.

Selection Process and Timeline

  • Applications will be evaluated by a subcommittee of the Graduate Council.
  • Award decision date to be announced April 2025.
  • The $2,000 award will be disbursed to the student at the beginning of Fall 2025.
  • During AY 2025-26, all awardees may receive a follow-up survey confirming the use of the funds and asking about their experience. The Division of Graduate Studies may use this information to improve future funding opportunities and/or feature awardees on their website or social media.
