Determining Contract Dates
For Research and Administrative GEs, please use the standard summer contract dates of 6/16 - 9/15.
For Teaching GEs assigned to four-, eight-, and twelve-week courses, contract start and end dates are the 16th (for the start) and 15th (for the end) of the corresponding months as outlined below.
Per the UO-GTFF CBA, appointment dates in the table below are approximate. Actual working dates may vary based on course start dates, end dates, and grading deadlines. In no case shall a hiring unit require a GE to exceed the maximum employee assigned responsibilities for their FTE. Teaching GEs are not expected to work beyond when grades are due.
Timing and Duration of Class | Sample Class Start Date | Sample Class End Date | Contract Start Date | Contract End Date |
|---|---|---|---|---|
First 4 weeks | June 23 | July 18 | June 16 | July 15 |
Second 4 weeks | July 21 | August 15 | July 16 | August 15 |
Third 3-4 weeks | August 18 | September 5 | August 16 | September 15 |
8 weeks | June 23 | August 15 | June 16 | August 15 |
12 weeks | June 23 | September 12 | June 16 | September 15 |
Summer contract dates for teaching courses other than four-, eight-, and twelve-week-long courses will be the same as those outlined in the summer term instructional assignment guidelines issued by Human Resources.
Tentative Offers for Summer Teaching
Recognizing the variability of summer course registration, employing units may take the following steps to establish summer appointments:
- Determine interest through process consistent with Article 19, Section 4 of the CBA.
- Ask GEs to indicate interest in summer work at any time during the academic year
- Issue a tentative summer offer pursuant to Article 19, Section 4 of the CBA. This offer can be made contingent on sufficient course enrollment.
- Tentative summer offers can be rescinded without penalty up to four weeks prior to the start of the summer session in which the work is scheduled to commence.
- If a tentative offer is rescinded later than four weeks prior to the start of the summer session which work is scheduled to commence, the GE will be entitled to a payment of $300 in consideration of work performed preparing for the assignment

Appointment Changes after Notice of Appointment is Issued
- Rescinding a Formal Offer: After approval of the ePRF by the Division of Graduate Studies, the position is formally offered via issuance of a Notice of Appointment (NOA). Once the NOA is issued, there is a 10 day rescission period (Article 17, Section 4).
- Changing an Assignment: The CBA provides guidance regarding changes to assignment as a result of increase/decrease of course enrollment in Article 9—Work Agreement/Work Assignment—Section 3.
- Layoff: GEs may not be laid off due to a class being cancelled as a result of inadequate course enrollment. Layoff is defined in Article 21 as a separation from university service during the period of a GE appointment due to a reduction in force or a reduction in a department for financial or academic reasons.
Minimum FTE for Summer Teaching GEs
Article 22 of the CBA specifies that for four-week or eight-week summer courses, GEs with sole responsibility (that is, sole responsibility for preparation for and teaching of classes assigned to them) shall be hired at the following FTE:
- Minimum .40 FTE for a 3 credit course
- .49 FTE for a 4 or 5 credit course
Exceptions to the .49 FTE Limit during Summer Term
Under some circumstances, GEs may be hired to work up to 1.0 FTE during the summer term.
