Supervising Graduate Employees

GE supervisors provide important onboarding and professional development experiences for GEs. This page brings together essential resources, timelines, and tools to help supervisors support GEs and ensure compliance with university and contract policies. Excellent supervision is important to promote graduate students’ professional development and academic success. Thank you for serving in this role. 


 


Before Start Date

NOTE:  As some of these tasks are shared between the hiring unit and supervisor, for the following tasks, connect with the hiring unit of this GE.

Complete GE supervisor trainingsin MyTrack: Emerging Supervisors Training Series and/or
MyTrack Supervisors Guide

Coordinate access to systems 

Accounts, Teams phone, Canva, email role accounts, file shares, building access cards, keys, software logins, workstation, network devices

Set up workspace and order supplies/equipment

Furniture, equipment, computer, business cards, office door nameplate, mailbox, copier code

Provide GE with orientation & first-week schedule

Order GE uniforms / PPE

 

6

Verify GE is registered for a minimum 9 credits

Send (or confirm hiring unit has sent) welcome email to GE with first day of work, location, etc.

Review with GE policies of your unit's GDRS 

General Duties and Responsibilities Statements (GDRS) describe GE work expectations and conditions.

Review with GE work schedule and expectations

Review sick leave / absences policies with GE

Review safety & emergency protocols with GE

 

5

Review dress code & appearance with GE

 

6

Arrange  work accommodations for GEs  (or confirm hiring unit has)

Discuss official GE work accommodations approved by the Office of Equal Opportunity and Access.

Encourage GE to promptly complete mandatory training: Title IX: non-discrimination/harassment/retaliation: direct link , via MyTrack
